The 2014 MRCA Committee is thrilled to announce the finalists for the 2014 award: Benediction by Kent Haruf, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker, and TransAtlantic by Colum McCann.

This year the committee read a huge quantity of really incredible books, and we are grateful for the generosity of the publishers who made these titles available to all of us.

These top four are a great mix of people, places, times and twists, and will appeal to folks of many reading tastes. We look forward to hearing Mainers’ opinions on the books and will eagerly await YOUR decision on the best of the best.

Here’s to warm weather and a good book (or four!)

I was hoping to get through the short list before the finalists were announced, but I still have three to go. Of the seven I’ve read, two of my three favorites are finalists–it will be a tough decision!

I should not venture such a dogmatic opinion without having read all four of your worthy contestants. But BENEDICTION is a wonderful read, and I do not expect to have to change my mind once the other three have been allowed a fair hearing. Carry on with this worthy venture.
